What does Job 29:12 mean?

Job 29:12 gives a reason people spoke well of Job: he came to the aid of people who were in desperate need and had no one else to turn to. Job presents his past reputation as tied to how he treated vulnerable people.

Job is speaking about his former life as he addresses his friends. The word “because” connects his account of helping others to the praise he recalls in the preceding verse. The person who “cried” is someone calling out for help.

The Hebrew behind Job 29:12

• “delivered” — מָלַט (malat): This word can mean to rescue or bring someone to safety. It gives Job’s help the force of a rescue, not merely a kind response.
• “poor” — עָנִי (ʿani): This word can describe someone who is poor, afflicted, or in a lowly position. It can point to the person’s hardship as well as a lack of resources.
• “fatherless” — יָתוֹם (yatom): This word refers to a child without a father. In Job’s setting, such a child could be left without a key provider and defender.
