What does John 14:1 mean?

John 14:1 records Jesus telling his disciples not to let their hearts be troubled, encouraging them to trust in God and also to trust in him. This verse is a call for calm and confidence, assuring the disciples that faith in both God and Jesus is the answer to their anxiety.

Jesus is speaking to his closest followers during the Last Supper, just after telling them difficult news about his coming departure. The disciples are confused and worried about what will happen next.
