What does John 6:13 mean?

John 6:13 describes what was left after Jesus fed a large crowd with five barley loaves and two fish. The food was enough for the people who ate, with a substantial amount left over: the gathered pieces filled twelve baskets.

The narrator describes the gathering after Jesus tells the disciples to collect the remaining pieces in verse 12. The baskets make the amount visible: these were pieces of the barley loaves that remained after the meal.

The Greek behind John 6:13

• “fragments” — κλάσμα (klasma): The word means a broken piece of food. Here, the pieces are from the loaves distributed for the meal, not whole loaves held back.
• “above” — περισσεύω (perisseuō): The word carries the sense of being left over or in excess. In the phrase “over and above unto them that had eaten,” the pieces are what remained beyond what the people ate.

Why John 6:13 matters

• The gathering follows Jesus’s concern that the food not be wasted. In verse 12, he tells his disciples to gather the remaining pieces “that nothing be lost.”
• The twelve baskets give a concrete measure of what remained. The number tells the reader how many baskets were filled; John 6:13 does not itself assign a meaning to that number.
• The verse connects the leftovers to the original five loaves. John’s phrase “the fragments of the five barley loaves” keeps the reader’s attention on how far that small amount of bread went.
