What does Joshua 8:13 mean?

Joshua 8:13 describes the final positioning of Israel’s forces for an attack on Ai. The army and a hidden group take separate positions around the city, while Joshua moves into the valley at night. The verse shows how the forces are arranged before the fighting begins.

The “liers in wait” are soldiers who remain hidden so they can make a surprise attack. The valley places Joshua in the landscape between the forces and the city. The account is narration, rather than words spoken by Joshua.

The Hebrew behind Joshua 8:13

  • “liers in wait” — עָקַב (ʿaqav): The Hebrew word can carry the sense of lying in wait or watching for an opportunity. Here it identifies a concealed force, not soldiers merely waiting for orders.
  • “west” — יָם (yam): The word can mean “sea” and is also used for the western direction. In Israel’s setting, the sea lay to the west, making “west” the sense in this verse.

Why Joshua 8:13 matters
