What does Luke 5:25 mean?

Luke 5:25 shows that the man Jesus had just told to rise was able to act at once. In front of the people gathered there, the man stood, carried away the bed he had been lying on, and went home praising God.

The bed was the object on which the man had been brought to Jesus because he could not walk. His carrying it away gives the onlookers a clear picture of the change in his condition. Luke also draws attention to the man’s own response: he gives praise to God as he leaves.

The Greek behind Luke 5:25

  • “immediately” — παραχρῆμα (parachrēma): This means “at once” or “without delay.” The word marks how closely the man’s action followed Jesus’ command.
  • “glorifying” — δοξάζω (doxazō): This carries the sense of praising or giving honor. Here the wording pictures the man praising God as he went home, rather than describing a single remark.

Why Luke 5:25 matters

  • The man’s actions give the crowd visible evidence of what Jesus had said. In verse 24, Jesus told him to rise, take up his bed, and go home; verse 25 records him doing those things.
  • The healing is connected to the question of forgiveness in the wider scene. Jesus had first told the man that his sins were forgiven, and some of those present questioned his right to say that. Jesus then told the man to rise so they would know that he had authority to forgive sins (verses 20–24).
  • The man’s praise becomes part of the response of the people who saw the event. In the next verse, they too glorify God and say they have seen remarkable things.
