What does Numbers 15:9 mean?

Numbers 15:9 gives the amount of flour and oil a person must bring alongside a bullock presented to God. The flour offering is part of the same act of giving as the animal, with its own measured ingredients.

The instruction comes from God through Moses to the Israelites. Following the mention of a bullock in verse 8, verse 9 specifies what accompanies it. The oil is mixed into the fine flour, making a prepared offering rather than a separate measure of dry grain.

The Hebrew behind Numbers 15:9

  • “offering” — מִנְחָה (minḥah): This word can mean a gift or an offering. Here it names the flour mixture brought alongside the bullock; the KJV’s phrase “meat offering” does not mean that this part contains meat.
  • “flour” — סֹלֶת (solet): This word refers to fine flour. It points to prepared, finely ground grain rather than whole kernels.

Why Numbers 15:9 matters

  • The amounts change with the animal being brought. Earlier instructions give smaller measures of flour and oil for a lamb or a ram (Numbers 15:4–6); verse 9 gives the measures for a bullock.
  • The flour mixture is one part of a larger presentation. Verse 10 adds wine to be brought with the bullock, so the animal, flour mixture, and wine belong to the same set of instructions.
