What does Psalms 44:24 mean?

Psalms 44:24 gives voice to a community asking God why he seems absent while its people suffer. The question is addressed directly to God: the speakers see their affliction and oppression, yet cannot see his attention or help.

The image of a hidden face pictures someone turning away rather than looking toward those in need. Following the appeal for God to awake in verse 23, the question makes the community’s distress personal: “our affliction” and “our oppression” are the reasons for its plea.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 44:24
