What does Psalms 89:28 mean?

Psalms 89:28 describes God’s promise to David, the king named earlier in the passage. God says he will continue to show David mercy and keep his agreement with him. The promise looks beyond a single moment toward a lasting relationship.

God is the speaker, and “him” refers to David. After verse 27 speaks of David’s high position among kings, verse 28 turns to God’s own commitment. “Stand fast” pictures an agreement that remains firm rather than giving way.

• “mercy” — חֶסֶד (chesed): This word often means loyal love or kindness. Here it points to kindness joined with a lasting commitment, rather than a passing feeling.

Why Psalms 89:28 matters
