What does Zechariah 1:12 mean?

Zechariah 1:12 presents the angel of the LORD asking God to show mercy to Jerusalem and the cities of Judah after a long period of anger against them. The question gives voice to concern for places that had suffered and asks how much longer their distress will last.

The angel speaks to the “LORD of hosts,” a title that presents God as commander of heavenly armies. The question follows a report in verse 11 that the earth is at rest. Against that scene, the angel draws attention to Jerusalem and Judah.

The Hebrew behind Zechariah 1:12

  • “angel” — מַלְאָךְ (malʾakh): The word means “messenger.” In this verse, the messenger speaks to the LORD on behalf of Jerusalem and Judah.
  • “have mercy” — רָחַם (raḥam): The word carries the sense of showing compassion. The angel asks when God’s compassionate care will be shown to the affected cities.
  • “indignation” — זָעַם (zaʿam): The word refers to anger or displeasure. The angel describes the seventy years as a time when the cities have been under God’s anger.

Why Zechariah 1:12 matters

  • The angel’s concern reaches beyond Jerusalem alone. The words “the cities of Judah” include other communities affected by the long period of trouble.
  • “Threescore and ten years” means seventy years. For the first hearers, that span recalled the long aftermath of Jerusalem’s destruction and the removal of many people from Judah.
  • The question leads into an answer. In verse 13, the LORD responds to the angel with “good words and comfortable words,” words meant to bring comfort.
