What does 1 Corinthians 10:4 mean?

1 Corinthians 10:4 describes the Israelites drinking water during their journey through the wilderness after leaving Egypt. Paul calls their drink spiritual and identifies the rock that supplied it with Christ, linking their experience to Jesus.

The image draws on accounts of water coming from a rock in Exodus 17:1–7 and Numbers 20:2–13. Paul says the rock “followed them,” presenting its provision as accompanying the people on their journey.

Why 1 Corinthians 10:4 matters

  • Sharing that experience did not mean everyone in the group pleased God. Paul follows the description with “with many of them God was not well pleased” in verse 5, a contrast that matters to his warning to the Corinthians.
