What does 1 Corinthians 3:15 mean?

1 Corinthians 3:15 describes a person whose work fails a test but who is still saved. Paul separates the fate of the work from the fate of the worker: the loss is real, yet the person does not share the work’s destruction.

Paul uses the picture of a building exposed to fire. After the surviving work receives a reward in verse 14, verse 15 turns to work that burns. The phrase “yet so as by fire” pictures someone escaping through a fire, with the danger and loss that escape suggests.

The Greek behind 1 Corinthians 3:15

• “loss” — ζημιόω (zēmioō): The Greek carries the sense of suffering a loss or being deprived of something. Here the word points to what the worker loses when the work burns, rather than saying that the worker is destroyed.
• “saved” — σῴζω (sōzō): The word can mean to save or rescue. In Paul’s fire picture, the worker comes through the test, even though the work does not.
