What does 1 Corinthians 3:8 mean?

1 Corinthians 3:8 says that people who do different parts of God’s work belong to the same effort. Paul also says that each worker will receive a reward suited to that person’s own labour. Their shared purpose does not erase their individual work.

Paul uses the picture of growing a crop to describe his work and Apollos’s work among the Corinthians. In verse 6, Paul says he planted and Apollos watered. By calling the two workers “one,” Paul answers the divisions between people who favoured one leader over the other.

The Greek behind 1 Corinthians 3:8

• “one” — ἕν (hen): The Greek here has the sense of one thing or a single whole. It points to the workers’ shared purpose, even though they have different roles.
• “labour” — κόπος (kopos): This word often carries the sense of hard or tiring work. It brings out the effort involved in each worker’s task.

Why 1 Corinthians 3:8 matters

• The verse challenges the Corinthians’ rivalry over leaders. Earlier in the passage, Paul mentions people saying, “I am of Paul” and “I am of Apollos” (verse 4).
