1 Kings 8:10 (KJV)

What does 1 Kings 8:10 mean?

1 Kings 8:10 describes how, when the priests left the holy place in Solomon’s newly built temple, a cloud filled the house of the LORD. This cloud signaled a visible, powerful sign of God’s presence filling the temple.

The setting is the dedication of Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem. The priests had just completed placing the Ark of the Covenant inside the inner sanctuary. The appearance of the cloud marked a special moment, showing that God accepted the temple as His dwelling among the people.

The Hebrew behind 1 Kings 8:10

• "cloud" (עָנָן, ʿānān): This word means a visible cloud or mist. In the Bible, such a cloud often represents God’s presence or glory, as seen earlier in the wilderness with Moses.
• "filled" (מָלֵא, malē): This word means to fill up completely. The sense here is that God’s presence was so overwhelming that it occupied the entire temple, leaving no doubt about who was present.
• "house" (בַּיִת, bayit): This word means house or dwelling. In this context, it refers to the temple as God’s special dwelling place among His people.

Why 1 Kings 8:10 matters

• This verse highlights that God’s presence was not just a concept but something the people could experience in a real, sensory way, through the cloud.
• The cloud filling the temple connects this moment to earlier events, like God’s glory filling the tabernacle in Exodus, showing continuity in how God relates to His people.
• The verse emphasizes that the temple was not just a building; it became significant because God Himself chose to dwell there, making it holy.
