Exodus 5:1 (KJV)

What does Exodus 5:1 mean?

Exodus 5:1 describes Moses and Aaron approaching Pharaoh and delivering a message from the LORD, the God of Israel, commanding Pharaoh to let the Israelites go so they can hold a feast to God in the wilderness. This verse marks the beginning of Moses and Aaron’s direct confrontation with Pharaoh, presenting God’s demand for the Israelites’ release.

Moses and Aaron, acting as God’s spokesmen, go before Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, to relay God’s command. The request is specific: the Israelites are to be allowed to leave Egypt temporarily to celebrate a religious festival ("feast") in the wilderness. This moment sets the stage for the conflict between Pharaoh’s authority and God’s will, introducing the central struggle of the Exodus story.

The Hebrew behind Exodus 5:1

• LORD (יְהוָה, YHWH): This is the personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible, emphasizing that the message comes from Israel’s unique covenant God, not a generic deity.
• feast (חָג, chag): This word refers to a pilgrimage festival, often involving communal worship and celebration. The request is not just for freedom, but for a specific act of worship, highlighting the religious purpose behind the demand.
• wilderness (מִדְבָּר, midbar): The wilderness is not just empty land, but a place away from Egyptian society where the Israelites could worship God freely, showing the need for separation from Egypt’s influence.

Why Exodus 5:1 matters

• This verse clarifies that the initial request to Pharaoh was for a religious observance, not immediate permanent departure, which shows the measured approach Moses and Aaron take at first.
• By naming the LORD (YHWH) as the God of Israel, the verse sets up the coming conflict as not just political but spiritual, between Pharaoh and the God of the Israelites.
• The mention of a "feast in the wilderness" introduces the theme of worship and obedience to God, which will be central throughout the Exodus narrative.
