What does Ezekiel 24:17 mean?

Ezekiel 24:17 records God’s instruction to Ezekiel to bear his grief quietly and avoid the public customs normally associated with a death. The instruction makes Ezekiel’s response to a personal loss a visible message to the people around him.

The verse follows God’s warning that Ezekiel’s wife would die (verse 16). Ezekiel is told to keep his head covering and shoes on, rather than set them aside as signs of grief. He is also told not to cover his lips or eat the customary food provided for mourners.

• “cry” — אָנַק (ʾanaq): The word can mean to groan or sigh. Paired with “forbear,” it is often understood as allowing Ezekiel to groan quietly while holding back public lament.
• “head” — פְּאֵר (peʾer): The word refers to a head covering or headdress. The KJV’s “tire of thine head” means a head covering, not a wheel or a state of weariness.
• “lips” — שָׂפָם (sapham): The word can refer to the upper lip or the area around the mouth. Covering that part of the face was a recognizable sign of mourning.
