Ezra 2:54 (KJV)

What does Ezra 2:54 mean?

Ezra 2:54 lists two family groups—“the children of Neziah” and “the children of Hatipha”—as part of those returning from exile to Jerusalem. This verse is part of a larger record naming the families and groups who came back to rebuild their community after captivity.

Ezra is recounting the people who returned from Babylonian exile under the leadership of Zerubbabel. The verse simply records the descendants of Neziah and Hatipha, showing their inclusion among the returnees. This detail helps preserve the memory of these families and their role in restoring Israel’s life and worship.

Why Ezra 2:54 matters

• Ezra 2:54 shows the careful documentation of every group and family that returned, emphasizing the value of each person and lineage in the restoration of Israel.
• Including even lesser-known families like Neziah and Hatipha highlights that the return from exile was a collective effort involving many people, not just prominent leaders.
• The verse connects to the wider passage by forming part of a census that underlines the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring His people back and reestablish their community.
