What does Genesis 37:4 mean?

Genesis 37:4 shows how Jacob’s preference for Joseph damaged the relationship between Joseph and his brothers. Their resentment reached into their ordinary conversations: they hated Joseph so much that they could not speak kindly to him.

The narrator describes what the brothers saw and how they responded. After verse 3 mentions the special coat Jacob gave Joseph, verse 4 shows that the brothers recognized their father’s preference.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 37:4

• “peaceably” — שָׁלוֹם (shalom): This word can mean peace, well-being, or friendly relations. Here it points to the kind of friendly speech the brothers could no longer offer Joseph.
• “could” — יָכֹל (yakhol): This word expresses ability. Paired with “not,” it emphasizes how deeply their hatred affected even the way they spoke to Joseph.

Why Genesis 37:4 matters

• The brothers’ hatred begins before Joseph tells them his dreams. Genesis 37:5 says they hated him “yet the more” after he shared a dream, building on the hostility already described in verse 4.
• The family tension is visible before the later attack on Joseph. In Genesis 37:18, the brothers see him coming and plan to kill him; verse 4 helps the reader understand the hostility behind that plan.
• Jacob’s preference is not merely a private feeling in the story. The brothers see that he loves Joseph more, and their response changes how they treat Joseph.
