Haggai 2:16 describes a time when the people’s harvests yielded far less than they expected. Grain and wine, two important sources of food and drink, fell short when the people came to collect them.

Haggai speaks to the people on the Lord’s behalf, asking them to look back to the time before work began on the temple’s foundation. The grain heap and the wine press give familiar pictures of harvest work, when the amount gathered finally became clear.

• “pressfat” — יֶקֶב (yeqev): This word refers to a wine vat. The KJV’s old word “pressfat” pictures a container associated with making wine, where the juice could be collected.
• “press” — פּוּרָה (purah): This word refers to a wine press or its pressing area. Alongside “pressfat,” the word places the shortage in the process of turning grapes into wine.

Why Haggai 2:16 matters

• The shortfall affected more than one crop. The grain heap produced half the expected amount, while the wine yielded twenty vessels instead of fifty.
• The verse helps explain the people’s earlier hardship in the passage. In verse 17, the Lord names damage from blight, mildew, and hail, connecting the poor yields with trouble in the fields.
• The look back prepares for a change in the passage’s time frame. Verse 15 asks the people to consider the earlier period, while verse 19 turns their attention to what the Lord says will happen “from this day.”
