Leviticus 14:38 (KJV)

What does Leviticus 14:38 mean?

Leviticus 14:38 describes how the priest, after inspecting a house for signs of disease, must leave the house and close it up for seven days. This action is meant to separate the possibly contaminated house from the rest of the community while waiting to see if the problem spreads or clears up.

In this verse, God is giving instructions to Moses for the priests, who acted as health inspectors in ancient Israel. The situation involves a house suspected of having a kind of mold or mildew, which was considered a serious concern. By shutting up the house for seven days, the priest prevents others from entering and possibly being affected, and allows time to see if the condition changes.

The Hebrew behind Leviticus 14:38

• בַּיִת (bayit, "house"): This word appears multiple times, emphasizing that the instructions are about a physical dwelling, not a person or an object.
• סָגַר (sagar, "shut"): This word means to close or lock up, showing that the house is to be completely sealed off, not just left alone.
• שֶׁבַע (sheva, "seven"): The number seven often represents completeness or a full period in the Hebrew Bible, so the seven days here mark a full cycle of waiting and observation.

Why Leviticus 14:38 matters

• Leviticus 14:38 shows that ancient Israel took public health seriously, even in their religious laws, by having a careful process before declaring a house unclean.
• The verse highlights the priest’s role as both a spiritual and practical leader, responsible for the well-being of the community.
• This instruction connects to the larger passage about purity and cleanliness, showing that concern for holiness extended to everyday life, including the places where people lived.
