What does Leviticus 14:53 mean?

Leviticus 14:53 describes the final act in a ceremony for a house that had been affected by a spreading mark. The priest releases a live bird outside the city. Through the ceremony, the house is made clean, meaning it is fit for use again under Israel’s laws.

After the sprinkling described in verse 52, the bird flies away into open country. The release takes place beyond the city, giving the ceremony a visible ending outside the inhabited area.

The Hebrew behind Leviticus 14:53

• “atonement” — כָּפַר (kaphar): This word can express making something acceptable through a prescribed act. Here, the KJV applies it to a house, not to a person asking forgiveness.
• “clean” — טָהֵר (taher): This word means to be clean or become clean. Here, it describes the house’s standing under the law after the priest’s ceremony, rather than simply saying the building has been washed.

Why Leviticus 14:53 matters

• The ceremony follows an inspection and repairs. Earlier in the passage, the priest checks whether the mark has spread or returned, and affected stones and plaster may be removed (Leviticus 14:39–45). The release of the bird comes after the house has passed inspection.
• The live bird is part of a paired action. Leviticus 14:49–52 describes two birds: one is killed over fresh water, and the living bird is used with other materials to sprinkle the house. Verse 53 then gives the living bird a different outcome.
