What does Psalms 50:7 mean?

Psalms 50:7 introduces God’s case against Israel. God calls the people to listen as he speaks about their conduct, addressing them as a people who already belong to him.

The words “testify against thee” picture a witness presenting evidence in a case. After the gathering described in verse 6, God addresses Israel directly, ending with the personal claim, “I am God, even thy God.”

The Hebrew behind Psalms 50:7

• “Hear” — שָׁמַע (shamaʿ): The word means to hear or listen. It can also carry the sense of paying attention to what is said, which fits God’s call to Israel.
• “testify” — עוּד (ʿud): The word can mean to bear witness or give testimony. Here it gives God’s speech the sense of a witness speaking against the people.

Why Psalms 50:7 matters

• God’s words are directed to a particular people, not an unnamed audience. “My people” and “O Israel” identify those being addressed.
