What does Genesis 43:3 mean?

Genesis 43:3 describes Judah explaining to his father, Jacob, why the brothers cannot simply return to Egypt for food. The Egyptian official they met has made their return conditional: they must bring their youngest brother, Benjamin, with them.

Judah speaks after Jacob asks his sons to go back and buy food. “See my face” pictures an audience with the official, who controls their access to grain. The brothers do not yet know that the official is their brother Joseph.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 43:3

• “solemnly protest” — עוּד (ʿud): This verb can carry the sense of warning someone firmly. Its repeated form here strengthens the warning and helps explain the KJV’s “solemnly.”
• “face” — פָּנִים (panim): The word means “face,” but seeing someone’s face can also mean appearing before that person. Here it points to meeting the Egyptian official again.

Why Genesis 43:3 matters

• Judah presents Benjamin’s presence as a condition set by the official, not as a preference of the brothers. The phrase “except your brother be with you” makes Benjamin essential to their return.
• The warning gives Judah’s reply its urgency. Jacob has asked the brothers to buy more food, but Judah says they face a condition they cannot meet without Benjamin.
• The account also places the reader in a different position from the brothers. Genesis 42:8 says Joseph recognized them, while they did not recognize him; Judah therefore calls Joseph simply “the man.”
