Genesis 43:19 (KJV)

What does Genesis 43:19 mean?

Genesis 43:19 describes how Joseph’s brothers approached the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the entrance before entering. The verse shows the brothers taking care to address the steward directly, likely because they were anxious about their situation in Egypt.

The scene takes place as Joseph’s brothers return to Egypt with Benjamin to buy more grain. They are worried about a previous incident involving money found in their sacks, so they stop at the doorway to speak with the steward (the person in charge of Joseph’s household) before going inside. This careful approach highlights their concern and respect for Egyptian customs and authority.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 43:19

• "Near" (נָגַשׁ, nagash): This word often means to come close with intention or respect. Here, it shows the brothers are approaching the steward thoughtfully, not barging in.
• "Steward" (אִישׁ, ish): While this word usually means "man," in context it refers to the man in charge of Joseph’s house, functioning as a steward or overseer.
• "Communed" (דָּבַר, dabar): This word means to speak or converse, often with a sense of discussing something important or serious. The brothers are not making casual conversation but addressing a matter of concern.
• "Door" (פֶּתַח, petach): This term refers to the entrance or opening of the house. The detail that they spoke at the door suggests a formal or cautious approach, not entering uninvited.

Why Genesis 43:19 matters

• The verse highlights the brothers’ anxiety and carefulness, showing they are trying to handle the situation properly and avoid misunderstandings with Egyptian authorities.
• By mentioning the steward and the door, the verse sets up the respectful and somewhat tense interaction that follows, which is important for understanding the brothers’ mindset and the unfolding story.
• This moment connects to the larger narrative of Joseph testing his brothers, showing their changed attitudes and sense of responsibility compared to earlier chapters.
