Genesis 43:6 (KJV)

What does Genesis 43:6 mean?

Genesis 43:6 shows Jacob, called Israel, questioning his sons about why they told the Egyptian official (Joseph, though they do not know it) that they had another brother. Jacob feels wronged and is upset that his sons revealed this detail, which has now led to more trouble for the family.

In this scene, Jacob is speaking to his sons after they return from Egypt, where they had gone to buy food during a famine. The Egyptian ruler had demanded to see their youngest brother, Benjamin, before allowing more grain to be sold to them. Jacob’s question reveals his distress and suspicion, as he fears for Benjamin’s safety and blames his sons for making the situation worse by mentioning another brother.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 43:6

• Israel (יִשְׂרָאֵל, yisra'el): The use of Jacob’s covenant name, Israel, highlights the significance of the moment and his role as the patriarch of the family.
• Ill (רָעַע, ra'a): This word means to do harm or deal badly. Jacob’s choice of this word shows he feels personally wronged or hurt by his sons’ actions, not just inconvenienced.
• Tell (נָגַד, nagad): This verb means to declare or make known. Jacob is specifically troubled that his sons “made known” the existence of another brother, which set off the chain of events.
• Man (אִישׁ, ish): Refers to Joseph, whom the brothers do not recognize. The word simply means “man,” but in this context, it emphasizes the unknown and foreign nature of the Egyptian official to Jacob.

Why Genesis 43:6 matters

• Genesis 43:6 highlights Jacob’s ongoing fear and protectiveness over Benjamin, especially after losing Joseph years earlier, which shapes the family’s decisions throughout this story.
• The verse shows the tension and lack of trust between Jacob and his sons, hinting at deeper family wounds and suspicions that have not healed.
• This moment sets up the next steps in the narrative, where the brothers must convince Jacob to let Benjamin go to Egypt, moving the story toward its climax and eventual reconciliation.
