What does Psalms 55:6 mean?

Psalms 55:6 expresses the speaker’s longing to escape the fear and trouble surrounding him. He imagines having the freedom of a dove, so that he could leave the scene and find a place of rest.

The image follows his description of fear and trembling in verse 5. A dove’s wings give shape to a wish for a quick escape: the speaker pictures himself rising above what threatens him rather than facing it where he stands.

The Hebrew behind Psalms 55:6

• “rest” — שָׁכַן (shakhan): This word can mean to dwell or settle down. Here it suggests reaching a place where the speaker can settle, as well as finding relief from distress.

Why Psalms 55:6 matters

• The speaker presents escape as a wish, not something he has already done. “Oh that I had wings” puts distance between his present situation and the freedom he imagines.

• The wish has a destination as well as a starting point. In verse 7, the speaker imagines wandering far away and remaining in the wilderness, away from the city and its trouble.

• The desire to flee sits alongside the speaker’s decision to call on God. Later, in verse 16, he says, “As for me, I will call upon God”; the passage gives voice both to his fear and to his appeal for help.
