2 Corinthians 1:22 (KJV)

What does 2 Corinthians 1:22 mean?

2 Corinthians 1:22 says that God has marked believers as His own and has given them the Holy Spirit as a guarantee in their hearts. This verse describes both a sense of security and a promise from God, showing that believers belong to Him and that He has given them something lasting and trustworthy.

Paul is writing to the church in Corinth, reassuring them of God’s faithfulness. He uses the image of being “sealed” and receiving an “earnest” (a down payment or pledge) to explain that God’s gift of the Holy Spirit is a real, present sign that God’s promises are trustworthy and will be fulfilled.

The Greek behind 2 Corinthians 1:22

  • "sealed" (ἐσφράγισεν, esphragisen): This word means to mark with a seal, like a stamp of ownership or authenticity. In the ancient world, a seal showed something was genuine or protected by the authority of the one who sealed it. Here, it points to God’s claim and protection over believers.
  • "earnest" (ἀρραβών, arrabōn): This word refers to a first installment or down payment, guaranteeing that the full amount will come later. Paul uses it to say that the Holy Spirit is a real, present assurance of everything God has promised for the future.
  • "Spirit" (πνεῦμα, pneuma): This is the word for the Holy Spirit, who is given “in our hearts.” The verse emphasizes that this is not just an external sign, but something deeply personal and internal for each believer.

Why 2 Corinthians 1:22 matters

  • This verse clarifies that the Holy Spirit is not just a future hope but a present reality, showing God’s commitment to those who trust Him.
  • Paul’s language of sealing and earnest highlights the security and certainty of God’s promises, which would have been reassuring to early Christians facing doubts or hardships.
  • The verse connects to Paul’s wider message in the letter about God’s reliability and the real, ongoing work of the Spirit in believers’ lives, not just a distant or abstract idea.
