What does Genesis 14:19 mean?

Genesis 14:19 presents Melchizedek’s blessing of Abram as coming from the highest God, who possesses heaven and earth. Melchizedek’s words connect Abram’s recent victory with a God whose authority reaches beyond the local rulers Abram has encountered.

Melchizedek is speaking to Abram after Abram’s rescue of Lot and the other captives. As king of Salem and a priest of the most high God, Melchizedek brings a priest’s blessing into Abram’s meeting with the kings.
