What does Isaiah 37:3 mean?

Isaiah 37:3 describes King Hezekiah’s view of the crisis facing Jerusalem. He sees the Assyrian threat and the words spoken against God as a moment of distress and disgrace, when his people lack the strength to bring about their own deliverance.

Hezekiah sends officials to Isaiah with this message. The image of children ready to be born, but with no strength to deliver them, pictures a dangerous moment when help is urgently needed.

• “trouble” — צָרָה (tsarah): This word can mean distress or a time of danger. It presents the day as a pressing crisis, not merely an inconvenience.
