Jeremiah 6:16 (KJV)

What does Jeremiah 6:16 mean?

Jeremiah 6:16 describes God telling the people to pause and consider the ancient, proven ways of living—paths that lead to what is truly good—and to choose to walk in them, promising rest for their souls if they do. However, the people refuse to follow these ways, rejecting the guidance offered.

In this verse, the prophet Jeremiah is relaying a message from the LORD (God) to the people of Judah during a time of national crisis and moral decline. God urges them to look back to the trustworthy paths of their ancestors, asking them to seek out and follow what is right and good. The verse ends with the people's stubborn response, highlighting their unwillingness to change course even when offered peace and rest.

The Hebrew behind Jeremiah 6:16

• "ways" (דֶּרֶךְ, derek): This word often means a road, path, or way of life. Here, it points to different choices or directions the people could take, emphasizing that there are multiple options before them.
• "old" (עוֹלָם, olam): This word means something ancient or everlasting. The "old paths" are not just old-fashioned but are time-tested ways that have proven good over generations.
• "good" (טוֹב, tov): This word means good, pleasant, or beneficial. The "good way" is not just morally right but also leads to well-being and peace.
• "rest" (מַרְגּוֹעַ, margoa): This word means rest or relief. The promise is not just physical rest but a deeper sense of peace and security for the soul.

Why Jeremiah 6:16 matters

• Jeremiah 6:16 clears up the idea that God is only interested in new or novel approaches; instead, God points people back to reliable, time-honored ways that bring true well-being.
• The verse emphasizes human responsibility: the people are invited to "stand," "see," "ask," and "walk," showing that following God's way is a deliberate choice, not something automatic.
• In the wider context, this verse highlights the tragedy of Judah's refusal to listen, setting up the consequences that follow in the rest of Jeremiah’s message.
