What does John 12:43 mean?

John 12:43 explains why some leaders who believed in Jesus kept their belief private. They valued the approval they could receive from other people more than the approval they could receive from God.

After describing their fear of being put out of the synagogue, or Jewish place of worship, the writer gives the reason beneath their silence. The word “praise” points to the honor and standing the leaders wanted from others.
