What does Matthew 12:6 mean?

In Matthew 12:6, Jesus tells the Pharisees that someone greater than the temple is present among them. Jesus is speaking about himself while defending his disciples, who have been accused of breaking the Sabbath by picking grain.

The temple in Jerusalem was the central place of worship for the Jewish people. After referring to the priests’ work there on the Sabbath, Jesus points to his own presence as relevant to the dispute.

The Greek behind Matthew 12:6

• “greater” — μεῖζον (meizon): The Greek carries the sense of something greater in importance. Its form can refer to something rather than naming a person directly, though the KJV expresses the comparison as “one greater.”
• “temple” — ἱερόν (hieron): This word refers to the temple and its grounds. The comparison brings to mind the whole place where the priests carried out their duties.

Why Matthew 12:6 matters

• Jesus is answering a challenge about his disciples’ conduct, not making an isolated comparison. The Pharisees had objected to the disciples picking grain on the Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest (Matthew 12:1–2).
• The comparison gives weight to Jesus’ defense. If the priests’ Sabbath duties at the temple were accepted, the presence of one greater than the temple matters when judging his disciples’ actions (Matthew 12:5–6).
• Jesus also directs attention to mercy in judging others. In the next verse, he quotes the words “I will have mercy, and not sacrifice” and speaks of condemning “the guiltless” (Matthew 12:7).
