What does Proverbs 25:22 mean?

Proverbs 25:22 says that giving food and drink to an enemy can affect that person deeply, and that the LORD will reward the one who shows such kindness. The verse connects a response to an enemy with both the enemy’s reaction and the LORD’s response.

The picture of heaping burning coals on someone’s head is often understood as an image of bringing that person to shame or remorse. Following the instruction to feed a hungry enemy in verse 21, the image gives a striking reason for the unexpected kindness.

The Hebrew behind Proverbs 25:22

• “fire” — גֶּחָלִים (geḥalim): The Hebrew refers to burning coals or embers. The KJV joins this word with “coals” to convey the vivid image of hot embers piled on a person’s head.
• “reward” — שָׁלַם (shalam): This word can carry the sense of repaying or giving recompense. Here, the LORD is the one who responds to the kindness described in the preceding verse.

Why Proverbs 25:22 matters

• The kindness is directed toward an enemy, not simply a friend. Verse 21 names the person as “thine enemy” and describes giving that person bread and water.
• The verse places the reward in the LORD’s hands. The words “the LORD shall reward thee” distinguish that reward from whatever effect the kindness has on the enemy.
• Paul later quotes this passage when discussing how to respond to wrongdoing. In Romans 12:20–21, he connects the image of burning coals with overcoming evil by doing good.
