What does Ruth 4:16 mean?

Ruth 4:16 shows Naomi taking an active place in the care of Ruth and Boaz’s newborn son. Naomi holds the child close and becomes his caregiver, bringing her into the daily life of the new family.

The narrator pictures Naomi placing the child against her chest or in her lap. After the words spoken to Naomi in verse 15, the story turns to Naomi’s own actions and her closeness to the child.

The Hebrew behind Ruth 4:16

• “bosom” — חֵיק (ḥeq): This word can mean the chest or lap. Here it pictures the child held close against Naomi’s body.
• “nurse” — אָמַן (ʾaman): The word can describe caring for or raising a child. In this verse, it presents Naomi as a caregiver; the term by itself does not require the sense of a woman feeding a baby at her breast.

Why Ruth 4:16 matters

• Naomi’s role is a family role, not a claim that she gave birth to the child. Ruth 4:13 identifies Ruth as the child’s mother, while verse 16 shows Naomi caring for him.
• The child’s arrival also changes Naomi’s place in the story. Earlier, Naomi returned to Bethlehem grieving the deaths of her husband and sons (Ruth 1:3–5, 20–21); now she is shown holding a new child in the family.
• The child connects Naomi’s family to a later generation. The next verses name him Obed and identify him as the grandfather of David (Ruth 4:17, 22).
