1 Kings 9:10 (KJV)

What does 1 Kings 9:10 mean?

1 Kings 9:10 marks the completion of two major building projects by King Solomon: the temple for the LORD and Solomon’s own royal palace, after twenty years of work. The verse simply records this milestone, setting the stage for what follows in Solomon’s reign.

This verse is part of a historical account describing Solomon’s achievements as king over Israel. The narrator is summarizing a long period of construction, highlighting both the religious importance of the temple (the "house of the LORD") and the political significance of the king’s palace. The verse signals a turning point, as Solomon’s focus now shifts from building to other matters of leadership and governance.

The Hebrew behind 1 Kings 9:10

• בָּנָה (banah, “built”): This word emphasizes the act of constructing or establishing something important and lasting. Its use here underlines Solomon’s role as a builder, not just of physical structures but of Israel’s national identity.
• בַּיִת (bayit, “house”): This word is used for both the temple and the palace, showing a parallel between the dwelling place for God and the residence of the king. The repetition draws attention to the dual focus of Solomon’s reign: serving God and ruling the people.
• יְהוָה (YHWH, “LORD”): This is the personal name of Israel’s God, making clear that the temple is dedicated specifically to the LORD, not just any deity.

Why 1 Kings 9:10 matters

• This verse clarifies the timeline of Solomon’s building projects, showing that both the temple and the palace took a combined twenty years to complete, which helps readers understand the scale and ambition of his reign.
• By mentioning both the house of the LORD and the king’s house together, the verse highlights the balance in Solomon’s priorities between spiritual responsibilities and royal authority.
• The verse serves as a transition in the narrative, moving from the construction phase of Solomon’s rule to the consequences and events that follow, including his interactions with neighboring nations and the administration of his kingdom.
