2 Samuel 13:33 (KJV)

What does 2 Samuel 13:33 mean?

2 Samuel 13:33 tells the king not to believe that all his sons have been killed, but that only Amnon is dead. The verse is meant to calm the king’s fears and correct a mistaken report about the extent of the tragedy.

In this verse, Jonadab is speaking to King David after the murder of Amnon. Earlier, David had heard a rumor that all his sons were dead, but Jonadab reassures him that only Amnon has been killed. This moment comes after Absalom, another of David’s sons, has Amnon killed in revenge for Amnon’s assault of Tamar, their sister.

The Hebrew behind 2 Samuel 13:33

  • "Take" (שִׂים, sîm): This word means "to set" or "to place." Here, it is used in the phrase "take the thing to his heart," which means to let something deeply trouble or grieve you.
  • "Heart" (לֵב, lēv): In Hebrew thought, the heart is not just the seat of emotion but also of thought and decision-making. Jonadab is telling David not to let this news overwhelm his inner life.
  • "Thing" (דָּבָר, davar): This word can mean "word," "matter," or "thing." It refers to the report or news about the supposed death of all the king’s sons.

  • It connects to the wider passage by showing Jonadab’s role as an informant and the unfolding consequences of the violence within David’s family.
