What does Daniel 2:32 mean?

Daniel 2:32 describes a figure in King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream whose body is made from different metals. The changing materials matter because Daniel goes on to explain the figure as a picture of successive kingdoms, beginning with Nebuchadnezzar’s own kingdom.

Daniel is speaking to Nebuchadnezzar as he recounts the king’s dream. After introducing the imposing figure in verse 31, Daniel describes its materials from the head downward. The gold head, silver chest and arms, and brass middle make the figure look like a single body with distinct sections.

The Aramaic behind Daniel 2:32

  • “fine” — טַב (ṭav): This word can mean “good” or “fine.” In the phrase “fine gold,” it describes the quality of the gold, not the shape of the head.
  • “brass” — נְחָשׁ (neḥash): This word refers to a copper-based metal, often understood as bronze. The KJV’s “brass” names the metal of the figure’s belly and thighs.

Why Daniel 2:32 matters

  • The gold head has a particular meaning in Daniel’s explanation. In verse 38, Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar, “Thou art this head of gold,” linking the head to the king and his kingdom.
  • The change from gold to silver marks a change in kingdoms. Verse 39 speaks of another kingdom arising after Nebuchadnezzar’s, followed by a third kingdom associated with brass.
  • The description continues below the thighs. Verse 33 adds legs of iron and feet partly of iron and partly of clay, completing the figure that the king saw.
