Genesis 24:33 (KJV)

What does Genesis 24:33 mean?

Genesis 24:33 describes how food was brought to Abraham’s servant, but he refused to eat until he explained the purpose of his journey. The host then invited him to speak. This shows the servant’s focus on his mission before attending to his own needs.

Abraham’s servant is in the house of Rebekah’s family, sent to find a wife for Isaac. Even though hospitality was important in that culture, the servant insists on sharing his message first, highlighting his sense of duty. The host’s response, “Speak on,” gives him permission to explain why he has come.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 24:33

• “Set” (שִׂים, sîm) means “to place” or “to set before.” This word emphasizes that the food was intentionally presented as a gesture of welcome, showing respect and hospitality to the guest.
• “Errand” (דָּבָר, davar) is often used for “word,” “matter,” or “business.” Here, it refers to the servant’s important mission, stressing that he is not just a casual visitor but has a significant purpose.

Why Genesis 24:33 matters

• Genesis 24:33 highlights the servant’s commitment to his task, showing that he puts his responsibility above personal comfort, which sets the tone for the seriousness of his mission.
• The verse shows the cultural importance of hospitality, but also that sometimes duty takes precedence even over strong social customs.
• This moment prepares the reader for the servant’s explanation, building anticipation for the story he is about to tell and connecting the hospitality scene to the unfolding of God’s plan for Isaac.
