What does Genesis 27:14 mean?

Genesis 27:14 shows Jacob carrying out his mother Rebekah’s plan to prepare food for his father Isaac. Jacob gathers what Rebekah requested, and she prepares a dish suited to Isaac’s taste. The meal is part of their plan for Jacob to receive the blessing Isaac intended for his brother Esau.

The quick sequence “went,” “fetched,” and “brought” follows Jacob through each action. After Jacob raises a concern about being discovered in the preceding verses, his actions show that he follows Rebekah’s instructions.

The Hebrew behind Genesis 27:14

• “meat” — מַטְעַמִּים (matʿammim): The Hebrew word refers to tasty food or a pleasing dish. In this verse, the word points to food prepared in a way Isaac would enjoy, rather than simply to meat by itself.
• “loved” — אָהַב (ʾahav): The word can express affection or a strong liking. Here, the KJV uses it for Isaac’s enjoyment of a particular kind of food.

Why Genesis 27:14 matters

• Rebekah is the cook in the plan. The verse says Jacob brought the ingredients to his mother, and “his mother made savoury meat.” Her preparation helps make the meal fit Isaac’s expectations.
• The food is meant to resemble what Isaac expected from Esau. Earlier, Isaac had asked Esau to hunt game and prepare food he loved; Rebekah instead had Jacob bring young goats from the flock (Genesis 27:3–4, 9).
• The meal is one part of a larger disguise. Rebekah also dresses Jacob in Esau’s clothes and covers his hands and neck with goatskins before he takes the food to Isaac (Genesis 27:15–17).
