Numbers 33:51 (KJV)

What does Numbers 33:51 mean?

Numbers 33:51 records God telling Moses to speak to the Israelites and give them instructions for when they cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan. The verse sets the stage for what the Israelites are to do as they prepare to enter and settle in the promised land.

In this verse, God is addressing Moses, who is then to relay God’s message to the people of Israel. The moment described is just before the Israelites are to cross the Jordan River (a significant boundary) into Canaan, the land God promised to their ancestors. This instruction marks a turning point, as the Israelites move from wandering in the wilderness to taking possession of their new homeland.

The Hebrew behind Numbers 33:51

• "Speak" (דַּבֵּר, dabber): This word is a command form, emphasizing that Moses is to actively and authoritatively communicate God’s instructions. It is not just casual speech but a formal, weighty announcement.
• "Children" (בְּנֵי, bnei): This term literally means "sons" but is often used to refer to the whole people or descendants, highlighting the collective identity of Israel as a family group.
• "Jordan" (יַרְדֵּן, yarden): The Jordan River is not just a geographical marker but a symbolic boundary between the wilderness and the promised land, making this crossing a moment of fulfillment and transition.
• "Land" (אֶרֶץ, erets) and "Canaan" (כְּנַעַן, kena‘an): These terms together specify the destination, grounding the promise in a real, physical place with historical and spiritual significance for the Israelites.

Why Numbers 33:51 matters

• Numbers 33:51 clarifies that the instructions about entering Canaan come directly from God, not just from Moses, giving them special authority and weight.
• The verse highlights the importance of the Jordan River as a threshold moment in Israel’s story, marking the end of their journey and the beginning of a new chapter.
• By naming Canaan specifically, the verse connects back to earlier promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, reminding the reader that this is the fulfillment of a long-standing covenant.
