Ruth went into the fields to gather grain left behind by the harvesters, and she happened to reach the section belonging to Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s late husband, Elimelech. The narrator identifies the owner’s family connection before Ruth knows whose field she has entered.

The key phrase is “her hap was to light on.” The Hebrew pairs מִקְרֶה (miqreh), “chance” or “occurrence,” with קָרָה (qarah), “to happen” or “to encounter.” Together, the words give the sense, “her chance happened upon.” The wording draws attention to a seemingly ordinary coincidence that brings Ruth into the field of someone connected to her family.
