Exodus 9:17 (KJV)

What does Exodus 9:17 mean?

Exodus 9:17 records God, through Moses, confronting Pharaoh for stubbornly setting himself above the Israelites and refusing to let them leave Egypt. The verse highlights Pharaoh’s pride and resistance, which stands in direct opposition to God’s command to release His people.

In this scene, Moses is speaking to Pharaoh during the series of plagues that God brings upon Egypt. The verse points out that Pharaoh is “exalting” himself against God’s people, the Israelites, by not allowing them to go free. This accusation sets the stage for the escalating consequences that will follow Pharaoh’s continued refusal.

The Hebrew behind Exodus 9:17

• “exaltest” (פָּרַע, pāra‘, H5549): This word often means to lift oneself up or act arrogantly. Here, it emphasizes Pharaoh’s prideful attitude and his defiance against both God and the Israelites.
• “people” (עַם, ‘am, H5971): This term refers specifically to the Israelites as a distinct group under God’s care, highlighting their identity and God’s claim on them.
• “go” (שָׁלַח, shālaḥ, H7971): This word means to send away or release. In this context, it underscores the command for Pharaoh to let the Israelites depart from Egypt, not just as a suggestion but as a directive from God.

Why Exodus 9:17 matters

• This verse clarifies that Pharaoh’s refusal is not just stubbornness but a form of self-exaltation, putting himself in opposition to God’s will.
• The emphasis on “my people” shows that the conflict is not just political or social, but deeply spiritual—God is claiming the Israelites as His own.
• By highlighting Pharaoh’s pride, the verse prepares the reader for the severe judgments that follow, showing that the plagues are a response to Pharaoh’s ongoing arrogance and resistance.
