Lamentations 3:21 (KJV)

What does Lamentations 3:21 mean?

Lamentations 3:21 describes the writer’s decision to deliberately remember something that gives him hope, even in the midst of deep sorrow. The verse highlights a turning point where the speaker chooses to recall a truth to his mind, which becomes the reason he can still hope.

The speaker is traditionally understood to be Jeremiah, expressing his grief over Jerusalem’s destruction. Surrounded by suffering, he pauses to focus his thoughts on something that brings hope. This verse marks a shift in the poem, moving from despair to a glimmer of confidence that things can improve because of what he chooses to remember.

The Hebrew behind Lamentations 3:21

• recall (שׁוּב, shuv): This word means “to return” or “to bring back.” Here, it suggests an intentional act of bringing something back to mind, not just a passive memory. The writer is making a conscious choice to focus his thoughts.
• mind (לֵב, lev): This word often refers to the inner self, including thoughts, feelings, and will. It’s more than just mental recall; it is a deep, personal reflection that involves the whole inner person.
• hope (יָחַל, yachal): This word carries the sense of waiting with expectation. It’s not just wishful thinking, but a steady, patient confidence that something good will come.

Why Lamentations 3:21 matters

• Lamentations 3:21 shows that hope is not always spontaneous; sometimes it is the result of a deliberate choice to remember what is true, even when circumstances are bleak.
• The verse marks a key turning point in the book, shifting from overwhelming grief to the possibility of renewed trust in God’s faithfulness, which is explained in the verses that follow.
• By focusing on the act of recalling to mind, the verse emphasizes the power of memory and reflection in sustaining hope during hard times, rather than ignoring or denying pain.
