In Matthew 13:33, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven—God’s rule—to leaven working through a batch of dough. The comparison emphasizes how something introduced into a larger mixture can spread until its effect reaches the whole.

Jesus tells the crowd this parable, or brief story with a point, after the image of the mustard seed in verse 32. The woman’s work would have been familiar: leaven was a piece of fermented dough mixed into flour to make the new dough rise.
