What does Romans 8:12 mean?

Romans 8:12 says that believers do not owe their old way of life their loyalty. Paul describes “the flesh” as a way of living that pulls people away from God, rather than a master whose demands they must obey.

Paul uses the picture of a debtor, someone who owes something to another. After speaking of God’s Spirit giving life in verse 11, he tells his readers that the flesh has no claim on how they live.

• “debtors” — ὀφειλέται (opheiletai): The word refers to people who owe a debt or have an obligation. Paul uses the language of owing to describe a claim on someone’s conduct.
• “flesh” — σάρξ (sarx): The word can mean physical flesh, but here Paul uses it in a broader sense. “To live after the flesh” describes a pattern of life directed by the flesh, rather than simply having a body.
• “after” — κατά (kata): The word here carries the sense of “according to” or “in line with.” It shows that Paul is talking about what directs a person’s way of living.

Why Romans 8:12 matters
