What does Deuteronomy 22:14 mean?

Deuteronomy 22:14 describes a husband accusing his new wife of not being a virgin when they married. His accusation damages her reputation and becomes the subject of a dispute that her parents bring before the town’s elders.

The husband’s words follow his dislike of his wife in verse 13. In the KJV, “when I came to her” refers to their sexual relations. “I found her not a maid” is his claim about her status before the marriage, not a statement by the narrator that the claim is true.

The Hebrew behind Deuteronomy 22:14

• “occasions” — עֲלִילָה (ʿalilah): The word can refer to an action or a charge. With “speech,” it conveys accusations made against the woman, rather than merely chances for people to talk.
• “maid” — בְּתוּלִים (betulim): The word here refers to virginity. The husband claims that he did not find the signs of virginity he expected when they had sexual relations.
