Leviticus 25:42 (KJV)

What does Leviticus 25:42 mean?

Leviticus 25:42 says that the Israelites are God’s servants because He brought them out of Egypt, so they must not be sold as slaves to other people. This verse sets a limit on how Israelites could be treated, reminding them that their ultimate loyalty and belonging is to God, not to any human master.

In this part of Leviticus, God is speaking to Moses, giving laws for the people of Israel about how to treat each other, especially regarding slavery and servitude. The context is the Year of Jubilee, when debts are forgiven and people who sold themselves into servitude are set free. The verse emphasizes that God’s rescue of Israel from Egypt means they are not to be treated as permanent property by anyone else.

The Hebrew behind Leviticus 25:42

• "Servants" (עֶבֶד, ʿeved): This word means a servant or slave, but here it highlights that the Israelites are God’s own people, not to be owned by others. The same word is used for both “servants” and “bondmen,” stressing the point that their service belongs to God alone.
• "Sold" (מָכַר, mākar): This word means to sell, especially as property. The verse uses it to forbid selling Israelites as if they were permanent slaves, drawing a line between temporary servitude and lifelong slavery.
• "As" (מִשְׁפָּט, mishpat): This word can mean "as" or "in the manner of," pointing out that Israelites are not to be treated in the same way as foreign slaves or property.

Why Leviticus 25:42 matters

• This verse clarifies that Israelite servitude was not meant to be permanent slavery, but a temporary condition with dignity and limits, rooted in their identity as God’s people.
• It connects to the broader laws in Leviticus 25 about the Year of Jubilee, showing that God’s rescue from Egypt has ongoing social and ethical consequences for how Israelites treat each other.
• The verse helps prevent misunderstanding about biblical slavery by showing that God set boundaries to protect the dignity and freedom of His people, even within ancient social systems.
