What does Matthew 23:32 mean?

In Matthew 23:32, Jesus tells the religious leaders he is addressing to complete the wrongdoing begun by their ancestors. His words are a sharp accusation: their own actions will continue the pattern of violence against God’s messengers.

The image is of filling a container until it reaches its full measure. After their claim in verse 30 that they would not have joined their ancestors in killing the prophets, Jesus challenges the distance they put between themselves and those ancestors.

• “Fill … up” — πληρόω (plēroō): The word carries the sense of filling something or bringing it to completion. Here Jesus uses a command to point toward the completion of a pattern already under way.
• “measure” — μέτρον (metron): The word can mean a measure or a measured amount. With “fill … up,” the word helps form the picture of an amount reaching its limit.

Why Matthew 23:32 matters

• Jesus’ command is not approval of the leaders’ conduct. The severe language that follows in verse 33 shows that Jesus is condemning them.
• The accusation concerns more than family ancestry. In verse 34, Jesus speaks of messengers whom the leaders will kill, whip, and pursue, connecting his charge to their own conduct.
