What does Matthew 23:8 mean?

Matthew 23:8 presents Jesus’ followers as a group whose members share a common standing, rather than a group ranked by impressive religious titles. In the KJV wording, Jesus identifies Christ as their one Master and calls them all “brethren.”

Jesus is speaking to the crowds and his disciples. His instruction follows his description of religious leaders who love public recognition, including being called “Rabbi” (verse 7). The word “brethren” pictures the group as a family of brothers.
