Matthew 23:9 (KJV)

What does Matthew 23:9 mean?

Matthew 23:9 says not to call anyone on earth your "father" because there is only one true Father, who is in heaven. This verse highlights that ultimate spiritual authority and honor belong to God alone, rather than to any human leader.

In this scene, Jesus is speaking to the crowds and his disciples, warning them about the religious leaders of the time who sought titles and special status. By saying "call no man your father," Jesus is challenging the practice of giving spiritual leaders titles that belong to God, reminding his listeners that God is the true source of spiritual life and authority.

The Greek behind Matthew 23:9

• πατέρα (patéra) — "father": This word refers to a male parent but was also used as a respectful title for teachers or spiritual leaders. Jesus’ use here warns against giving any human the kind of reverence or authority that belongs to God.
• εἷς (heis) — "one": This word emphasizes exclusivity—there is only one true Father in the spiritual sense, and that is God in heaven. This underlines the uniqueness of God's role compared to any human authority.

Why Matthew 23:9 matters

• Matthew 23:9 corrects a misunderstanding that religious leaders should be given ultimate spiritual authority or titles that belong to God alone.
• The verse fits into a larger section where Jesus criticizes religious leaders for seeking honor and special treatment, making it clear that humility and God’s authority are central.
• This teaching helps clarify the relationship between believers and God, reminding readers that no human should take the place of God as the ultimate spiritual guide.
