What does Matthew 24:26 mean?

Matthew 24:26 warns against reports that Jesus has appeared in a place people must seek out. Jesus tells his disciples not to go looking in a remote place or accept a claim that he is hidden inside a building.

Jesus is speaking to his disciples about claims that could mislead them. The two locations picture opposite kinds of places: an open, uninhabited area and private rooms away from public view. Following the warning about deception in verse 24, Jesus gives examples of the kinds of reports they might hear.

The Greek behind Matthew 24:26

• “desert” — ἔρημος (erēmos): A deserted or uninhabited place. The word can describe a wilderness, not necessarily a sandy desert.
• “chambers” — ταμεῖον (tameion): An inner room or private room. The word gives a sense of a space set apart from public view.

Why Matthew 24:26 matters

• The surrounding passage identifies the person being sought as Christ, a title used for Jesus. In Matthew 24:23, the claim is, “Here is Christ, or there.”
• The warning concerns claims backed by impressive acts as well as claims about locations. Matthew 24:24 says false christs and false prophets will show “great signs and wonders.”
